Why Homeschool?

August 28, 2010

So I figured since this blog will document my experiences with homeschooling that I should probably give an explanation of why we made this choice. My husband and his sister had a very successful experience with homeschooling growing up so that is what influenced me to look into homeschooling in the first place. In considering such an important choice I did my research on the pros and cons. I noticed the most reoccurring issues of homeschooling are patience and socialization. They are the most common concerns with parents facing this decision.

For patience it is natural to wonder if I will be capable of being patient enough to teach my children. To be honest anyone in a teaching environment has this fear. There will be good days and then there will be bad days. What we need to realize is that we have already been teaching our children and this will be no different. You teach your child to walk and talk successfully now you are just choosing to continue advancing their education instead of passing the torch to someone you feel is more qualified than you. Who can be more qualified to know the needs and learning methods of a child than their parents? As a parent you love your child unconditionally and that is why you are experiencing fear. No one would want to fail their child. You must trust that teaching your child will continue to come as natural as it has been since birth.

The socialization fear is fearing your child’s ability to know how to act and socialize in the real world. Socialization is something that is not created in a classroom. When in the real world will you ever be in a classroom with people the same age as you? I consider the real world the work place, cultural environments, and family settings. All of which you experience through homeschooling. Environments where you are expected to know how to interact with people of all ages.

I understand completely that I am lucky that I have the option to do this and I am grateful. Some families are not blessed with the choice because of financial issues, single parenting, or health.

So here are some of the reasons we choose to home-school.

  • Home-school allows my children to spend more quality time with daddy since he is a traveling musician.
  • I can ensure that my children will enjoy learning. I want them to be excited about learning and discovering new things!
  • Having our kids at home gives us more time with them so we can teach them how much God loves them and also lead themĀ in their relationship with Him. The extra time helps us to help them discover the gifts, passions, and plans that God has for them.
  • We can make memories together playing, learning, and exploring together.
  • We will be able to pick up and travel whenever we want to see out-of-state family. Our closest family members are 6.5 hours away!

Hope this helps you if you might be trying to make the decision to home-school or not…

I am looking forward to blogging about the adventures we have along this journey.
